    • The Uptown Theater originally opened in 1950 as a movie theater with 1100 seats and a small stage for live performances.

      • The theater featured sloped floor for optimal viewing, a “cry room,” spring-loaded seating, limited oversized seats
      • Opened as an un-segregated house, years before other area theaters
      • Screened movies for the whole family as well as Saturday morning kiddie shows
      • Minstrel shows, stage shows, midnight shows
      • In 1950 adult tickets were 35 cents, child tickets were 12 cents
      • Pickle juice snow cones were a favorite treat
  • Present:
    • The City of Grand Prairie will restore the historic downtown landmark to its former glory, but with enhancements that allow for performing and visual arts.

      • The City of Grand Prairie purchased the Uptown in 2005
      • Restoration and rehabilitation began in May 2007
      • Exterior restoration completed September 2007

  • Future:
    • The Uptown Theater will become the pride and joy of downtown Grand Prairie, a true multi-use facility for the community and its visitors to enjoy

      • The City of Grand Prairie will create a Presenting Series of regional and national touring acts including live music, dance and theatrical performances
      • The Uptown will serve as the home for the productions of Grand Prairie Arts Council
